My friend Franco was having trouble getting some new gear set up for his podcast. We spent a little time on the phone but got nowhere “Bah! Just come over.” he said. “Let’s just have a beer or two, you can fix my set up and then we’ll chat.”
This is what it turned in to…
And now…some more information on some of the things I referenced in that silly, off-the-cuff unplanned, unprepared & unrehearsed interview:
@09:07 – I recall reading, “Inside the Magic Kingdom” by: Tom Connellan
Now, in full disclaimer, I read this book way back there–I think it was in 1995–so some of the ideas within may be terribly dated, but nonetheless, others I’m sure will still be relevant. Particularly the sections that dig into understanding who your true competitors are. I won’t spoil the whole book for you, but one of the most memorable citations–well, memorable in that I just pulled the book from my dusty bookshelf and searched for it, but to my credit it was highlighted. That highlight that was once a bright and shiny 1995 yellow now twinkling more on the brownish-beige side brought focus to these words: “Your competition is anyone who raises customer expectations–because if someone else satisfies customers better than you, no matter what type of business, you suffer by comparison.” If you like what you hear, then have a look here:
@20:41 – I allude to Ilise Benun‘s “Command the Fees You Deserve”
One of my favorite resources for learning and development in both business and creative subjects is creativeLIVE. You can watch any course when it airs live for free–for FREE–with the option to purchase for later and offline use. It’s a brilliant business model if you ask me! (Well, I think it’s a brilliant model even if you DON’T ask me, so there). The course I specifically mention is called, “Command the Fees You Deserve” and the instructor, Ilise Benun, is knowledgeable, well-spoken and an absolutely engaging throughout.
Ilise has written a fantastic book called, “The Creative Professional’s Guide to MONEY” which covers all the difficult topics and awkward conversations we were bound to have but no longer need to have! Take a peek at it here:
@23:24 – I exclaim, “Soak the beans!”
Franco asks, “If you were tell a student one thing from all your experience, what would it be? ….oh and you have 30 seconds.” As soon as those words washed over my ears, I immediately tensed up and felt the pressure of this chance to offer a new, almost helpless soul, a chance to avoid any number of mistakes I made on the journey of sound. A pressure not unlike that which would be felt by a time traveler tasked with imparting wisdom to past peoples in order to abate widespread disaster. Also at that moment, the most wonderful memory of a most wonderful sketch comedy group entered my mind and I said “Soak the beans!” That comedy group is none other than The Kasper Hauser Comedy Podcast and the episode–actually their first episode–is: “Ep 1: Phone Call to the 14th Century”. <– Please go here to listen now. –> or here. If you are not amused I will refund 100% of your investment. Also it is free and you have nothing to lose. Why are you still reading this? Go!
(added Dec 31, 2017) This book by Kasper Hauser is not only relevant after over 15 years is actually downright scary. Their premise? What if our future president were to keep his Blackberry and do presidential things publicly over the internet without reservation or thought? Uhmm…yeah…this resonates greatly in our current Twitler Regime. *gulp* I tell ya–the comedians get it long before the rest of us do! Anyway….*sigh*……check it here:
